Overcoming marketing challenges: Strategies for startups

Kelvin Golding FCIM, small business ambassador for the Chartered Institute of Marketing, provides insights into effective techniques for giving early-stage businesses valuable exposure.

Marketing has become a specialized field with a mix of digital and traditional methods, making it overwhelming for startups. By making the right marketing choices, your business could be among the successful ones. This article aims to guide you on this journey.

Understanding marketing

Research shows that many startups and small businesses struggle with marketing. However, marketing is more than just sales or advertising; it involves identifying, anticipating, and satisfying customer needs profitably. Lack of understanding about the true purpose of marketing can lead to missed opportunities for creating value in businesses.

Determining marketing budget

Successful companies invest 5 to 7 percent of their turnover in marketing. Without a solid marketing plan aligned with the overall strategy, businesses tend to focus on individual tactics rather than an integrated approach that delivers measurable ROI.

Importance of branding

Branding is more than just a logo; it involves creating a brand identity that resonates with consumers. Value is at the core of branding, and businesses must focus on building brand equity through consistent communication and customer engagement.

Key questions for profitable marketing

Market research and customer feedback are crucial for understanding customer preferences and optimizing marketing strategies. Asking the right questions can help businesses identify profitable segments and tailor their offerings accordingly.

Website marketing

Optimizing your website for user experience and mobile responsiveness is essential for attracting and retaining customers. Monitoring website analytics and engaging with social media platforms can further enhance your online presence.

Remember, a strong marketing strategy is the foundation for successful business growth. By implementing these tips and insights, small business owners can navigate the competitive landscape and achieve their marketing goals.

Looking to increase user engagement on your website? Consider adding a video to the homepage to double the time users spend on your site.

For improving your Google ranking, focus on SEO strategies like technical optimization, link building, quality content creation, and social and review management.

Content marketing is essential for building trust with customers and driving sales. Utilize various formats like blogs, videos, and infographics to engage with your audience.

Social media plays a crucial role in customer service and audience engagement. Utilize social listening and quality content to build trust and loyalty with your customers.

Email marketing is making a comeback as an effective customer acquisition tool. Personalize your communications and use click-through data for targeted marketing.

Online advertising offers vast reach and targeting options. Utilize platforms like Google AdWords and social media ads for effective marketing campaigns.

Offline advertising is still relevant, especially for local businesses. Consider options like local papers, sponsorships, and events to reach your target audience.

Exhibitions can be a powerful marketing tool, as seen in the case study of Speakers’ Corner. Utilize digital efforts alongside traditional marketing strategies for maximum impact on your business growth. However, the products were only loosely connected to the speakers we were trying to promote, resulting in the messages getting lost (but hopefully everyone enjoyed the freebies anyway!).

“We take pride in our face-to-face meetings and participation in events that allow us to connect with clients. In this digital age, while we recognize the importance of internet and social media platforms in our marketing strategy, we firmly believe in the value of personal interactions. Hosting showcase events under the Knowledge Guild and Comedy Collective brands provides us with a platform to showcase our speakers and comedians, as well as an opportunity to engage with clients. Additionally, positioning ourselves as thought leaders in the speaking industry through speaking engagements and guest blogs has been a key focus for us.

It’s important for companies to understand that one marketing strategy does not fit all. Tailoring interactions on different platforms to meet the diverse expectations of consumers and businesses is essential. Adapting services to align with platform trends, maintaining consistency in key messages, and staying ahead of marketing trends can give businesses a competitive edge in the digital landscape.

In today’s digital age, marketing is a powerful tool that can shape businesses and create impactful movements. By understanding consumer experiences and emotions, businesses can tailor their services to meet both professional and emotional needs. Engaging in extraordinary events that resonate with consumers can help maximize exposure and create lasting connections.

A case study on guerrilla marketing at The Great Escape Leeds & Sheffield highlights the creative approach taken by the company to generate buzz and increase awareness. By utilizing guerrilla marketing tactics, such as painting dead body chalk stencils on pavements, the company successfully garnered attention and engagement on social media platforms. The unconventional campaign not only sparked conversations within the city but also led to increased bookings and customer engagement. Creative marketing strategies that align with the core values of a business can have a lasting impact and drive success in a competitive market.” Sometimes, unexpected marketing exposure can turn out to be the most effective strategy!

In a social media marketing case study, Gemma Whates, founder of All By Mama, shared how social media played a crucial role in their early-stage marketing efforts. All By Mama, an online marketplace for parent-run businesses, initially relied on social media and word of mouth to build their community and engage with potential customers. While Facebook was a cost-effective tool in the beginning, they eventually had to increase their spending to maintain similar results. Winning awards and building a database from networking were also successful strategies for them.

On the other hand, Jonathan Lemer, co-founder of The Brains, emphasized the power of email marketing for businesses on a budget. The Brains, a virtual consultancy company, initially focused on networking and exhibiting at events to connect with potential clients. They found networking groups and monthly events to be beneficial in generating leads and making valuable connections.

Both case studies highlight the importance of reviewing and adapting marketing strategies regularly. It’s essential to focus on specific areas, analyze results, and adjust tactics to effectively reach and engage with your target audience. By understanding your audience and refining your messaging, you can maximize the impact of your marketing efforts. We were initially paying between $4-10 per click due to the competitiveness of our keywords, making it an unnecessary expense at the time. The only paid channel that showed some promise was YouTube, where we shared a brief introduction video of our services. Despite the increase in pricing over the past 18 months, video advertising remains a cost-effective option. While this strategy did not bring in many customers, it allowed us to test our content and messaging by analyzing click-through rates.

A significant turning point for us was when we started focusing on email marketing. This proved to be an effective marketing strategy on a budget. It is crucial to conduct thorough research and be proactive in email marketing to prevent costs from spiraling out of control. After testing various options, we settled on a formula using tools like Dataminer, Email Hunter, and Woodpecker to scrape LinkedIn for email addresses of target companies. This method allowed us to send out 2,500 emails per week and convert around 30% of prospects into paying customers.

Currently, we utilize a mix of marketing techniques, with networking, events, and referrals accounting for half of our business. We also send out regular newsletters to keep leads warm and engage in email marketing for cold prospecting, which contributes to about 20% of our client base. The remaining portion comes from paid advertising, specifically paid search and paid social.

In 2017, data analytics will play an increasingly important role in marketing strategies. Companies that can leverage data insights effectively will see significant success. While becoming a data scientist is not necessary, understanding the fundamentals is highly recommended.

Cat Gazzoli, founder of organic baby food brand Piccolo, emphasizes the value of strategic partnerships in marketing. Grassroots marketing activities with partners, parent groups, and festivals provide valuable feedback and interactions. Working with partners who share similar values has been rewarding, although some partnerships may not always yield the expected results. Monitoring various metrics and learning from mistakes is crucial in partnership marketing.

Partnering with organizations like the National Childbirth Trust has been beneficial for Piccolo, helping build trust with parents and giving back to the community. Engaging with customers through social channels and seeking feedback are essential practices for maintaining a strong brand presence. Piccolo’s launch in Asda was a significant milestone, expanding its reach and increasing online engagement with parents.

Similar to many other companies, particularly in the parent and baby industry, we make it a point to regularly engage with parents online through our social media platforms. In addition to our partnership with the NCT, we are fortunate to have established relationships with other reputable partners such as Waterbabies, Hartbeeps, and Buggyfit. These partnerships help us expand our reach and connect with parents to support them through the early stages of parenting, especially when it comes to introducing first foods.

Cultivating successful partnerships requires time and dedication, which is why our company places a strong emphasis on managing and prioritizing these relationships. We allocate at least one full-time team member to ensure that our partnerships run smoothly and that our partners receive the support they need.

Trusting Your Instincts

In the world of marketing, sometimes you have to follow your instincts. While data and ROI are important, ultimately, people connect with people, and they prefer to buy from individuals they trust. Marketing is not about being pushy; it’s about sharing something you are passionate about and believe others will also appreciate. It’s about making people aware that they have choices.

Companies with a genuine desire to make a positive impact and a strong social mission are the ones that are likely to succeed. By sharing your mission with the world, forging valuable partnerships with like-minded businesses, and listening to your customers’ needs, you can create a meaningful impact.
