In the current situation with the COVID-19 pandemic, many professionals and entrepreneurs are finding themselves adapting to remote work from their homes. While some may see this as a positive change, it can present challenges for many.
For entrepreneurs working from home, one of the biggest hurdles they may face is maintaining workplace productivity. Surprisingly, this is often not a concern that crosses the minds of new entrepreneurs at the beginning of their journey. Typically, the focus is on making money, finding clients, networking, and building the business.
However, the reality is that any successful company thrives because of the processes and routines it has in place that contribute to an efficient working environment. The same applies to the success of an entrepreneur. It is crucial to establish routines and habits that enhance workplace productivity.
“Spinning Wheels”
In a corporate setting, if you feel like you’re getting nowhere, there are usually colleagues and supervisors who can offer motivation and help you get back on track during rough days or weeks. However, as a home-based entrepreneur, you only have yourself to rely on!
The most important step you can take to boost efficiency in your home office is to approach your work intentionally every single day.
Planning
The key to staying intentional and in control throughout your workday is through planning. Planning creates a solid framework for your day to unfold, and it should begin at the end of the previous day.
To maximize productivity, spend 15 minutes at the end of each day planning for the next. What are your mission-critical objectives for the day? List them out. Whether it’s setting up credit card processing services or other tasks, having a plan for the next day can relieve stress. This way, when you start work the next morning, you already have a roadmap for the day.
The Morning Routine
One of the worst things you can do as an entrepreneur is to jump straight into work at your desk right after waking up. This approach can significantly impact your productivity, as I learned from personal experience after doing it for about a year.
After researching successful people and entrepreneurs’ morning routines, some common practices emerged:
- They wake up early, often between 5:00-6:00am;
- They don’t start working immediately after waking;
- They exercise in the morning;
- They visualize their day ahead;
- They have a nutritious breakfast.
You may not be a morning person or enjoy exercise, but the goal is to create a gap between waking up and starting work to prepare yourself for the day. This could involve activities like a morning walk, reading, meditation, or exercise. Experiment with different routines to find what suits you best.
To Conclude…
Establishing a morning routine can significantly enhance your productivity throughout the day. Approaching each day with clarity, energy, and intention can make you feel more in control, which is invaluable for entrepreneurs working from home.
