During our last conversation in 2021, Bryan Mahoney discussed co-founding Chord, an ecommerce platform that revolutionized the industry by separating the frontend from the backend. This innovative “headless” structure allowed merchants to tailor their experience by connecting with external providers of their choice.
However, Bryan realized that the setup was too complex and required replatforming. What merchants truly desired was a solution that consolidated data from external providers, offering a comprehensive view across all aspects of their business.
As a result, in 2023, Chord transformed into a data management company specifically tailored for ecommerce, eliminating the need for customers to utilize its frontend layer.
In a recent discussion, Bryan elaborated on the transition process and highlighted the significance of data for modern brands. The full audio recording is available below, with a transcript edited for clarity and brevity.
Eric Bandholz: Can you tell our audience about your role at Chord Commerce?
Bryan Mahoney: As the co-founder and CEO of Chord Commerce, my focus lies in assisting brands in leveraging their first-party data and digital channels to enhance their businesses.
I established the company in 2021, following my tenure as the chief operating officer at Glossier, a renowned cosmetics brand.
Initially, we introduced Chord as a headless ecommerce platform, aiming to streamline operations by separating frontend presentation from backend management. However, realizing the complexities it posed for merchants, we pivoted towards a more data-centric approach.
Bandholz: What prompted the decision to pivot the company rather than shutting it down?
Mahoney: My passion for commerce and branding fueled our determination to evolve. While initially offering a headless commerce solution, we were always cognizant of the data challenges that would arise from merchants engaging with multiple external platforms.
Recognizing the demand for a robust data solution, we transitioned towards a platform-agnostic model in 2023, eliminating the necessity for customers to use our frontend. This strategic shift broadened our scope and facilitated collaborations with diverse brands.
The advent of genAI systems further emphasized the criticality of centralized and accessible data, propelling our market outreach.
Bandholz: How does consolidated data benefit ecommerce entities?
Mahoney: A unified data source is imperative for achieving targeted objectives, whether it’s launching a successful customer acquisition campaign or introducing a new product line.
By amalgamating data from various sources, such as Google Analytics, Shopify, and Klaviyo, businesses can gain a comprehensive overview to make informed strategic decisions.
Bandholz: How do you standardize consolidated data for analysis?
Mahoney: Our platform, purpose-built for commerce, specializes in harmonizing data to provide actionable insights tailored for ecommerce businesses.
Bandholz: Chord could have assisted us in determining the optimal product launch date by analyzing historical trends and customer acquisition costs.
Mahoney: Absolutely, leveraging data insights can empower businesses to make informed decisions. While data serves as a guiding tool, it’s essential to blend it with organizational expertise and intuition.
Bandholz: Do you compare data from similar companies to offer benchmarks and industry standards?
Mahoney: Yes, we aggregate anonymized data from diverse sources to provide benchmarks and industry insights, ensuring data privacy and confidentiality for all parties involved.
Bandholz: What type of businesses can benefit the most from Chord’s services?
Mahoney: Our ideal clients are online retailers operating across multiple channels, seeking to harness the power of unified data and AI-driven growth strategies. Our services cater to businesses of varying scales, providing a comprehensive infrastructure at a competitive price point.
Bandholz: Where can individuals explore Chord’s offerings and get in touch?
